Decision records are a product surface

Architecture decisions are often written for the person who was in the room. A useful decision record should serve the person who arrives later, when the constraints have changed and the original context is gone.

I like to treat the record as part of the product: it should expose the decision, its shape, and the signals that would tell us to revisit it. This is less documentation-as-archive and more documentation-as-interface.
